The Installation Key
The first time ProtonAuctions runs, it creates a file called proton.lock in its folder. This is the key that encrypts your auction data, and it is the reason your data is always safe, whatever happens with your licence.
It belongs to your install, not your licence
This is the important distinction. proton.lock is generated on your server and is unique to it. It has nothing to do with your licence key. So an expired licence, a cancelled licence, even removing the plugin's licence entirely, never makes your data unreadable. The two are simply not connected. No plugin holds your economy hostage over a payment.
Back it up with your database
Because proton.lock is what unlocks your encrypted data, treat it as part of your database. Back the two up together.
If you move your server or restore a backup, bring proton.lock along with the database. Without it, the encrypted data cannot be read, the same way a backup of an encrypted drive is useless without its password.
Why it is built this way
Tying encryption to the installation instead of the licence is a deliberate choice, and it is on your side. The security protects your data from tampering while never being able to be turned against you. Your economy is yours to keep, licence or no licence.
