The pointer menus need two things: the setting switched on, and a way for players to download the menus' resource pack. On most servers the second part needs no work at all.

Turning them on

  1. Switch them on

    Set pointerUi.enabled: true in config.yml.

  2. Restart the server

The setting is read once at startup, so /ahadmin reload cannot turn the menus on. While starting, the console says when the pack is ready, with its size, and how it is being served.

  3. Try it

Join and accept the resource pack prompt, then run /ah. The auction house opens in the pointer menus.

How the pack reaches players

ProtonAuctions builds the pack itself, about 3 MB, and keeps a copy at plugins/ProtonAuctions/pointer/pack.zip. There are three ways to hand it to players:

WayWhat to setWhen to use it
Through the server's own portNothing. This is the default, packPort: 0.Most servers, including hosts that give you a single port.
On a separate portpackPort to a free port, and packHost if players reach the server by another address. When the pack cannot come through the game port.
Hosted by youpackUrl to a direct download link of pack.zip.Servers behind BungeeCord or Velocity.

All three are read at startup, so restart after changing them.

Networks and proxies

Behind BungeeCord, Velocity or proxy protocol, players never connect to the server's own port, so they cannot download the pack from it. The plugin notices this at startup and says so in the console. Upload plugins/ProtonAuctions/pointer/pack.zip somewhere players can download it, put the direct link in pointerUi.packUrl, and restart.

At every startup the plugin downloads the file at that link and checks it against the pack it built. When they do not match, the console says so, and players get the chest menus until the right file is uploaded. The pack changes with plugin updates, and when the layout editor changes the grid or the size of a box, so upload it again after either.

The link has to download the file itself. A link to a web page about the file, such as a share page, does not work.

Who gets the chest menus

The pointer menus only open for a player whose game has loaded the pack. Everyone else gets the chest menus, so nobody is locked out of the auction house:

  • a player who declines the pack, or whose download fails,
  • Bedrock players,
  • every player, while the file at packUrl does not match.

The pack prompt is optional. A player who declines it can still play, and still trade in the chest menus.

ItemsAdder can kick players who decline a resource pack or whose pack fails, and that includes this one. When either of its kick settings is on, the console warns at startup. Turn off resource-pack.kick-player-on-fail and kick-player-on-decline in plugins/ItemsAdder/config.yml, or keep the pointer menus off.

The other settings

pointerUi also sets what players start with and how the menu sits on screen: defaultMode, pinnedView, panelDistance, panelAngle and sounds. All five apply on /ahadmin reload. Each is described in config.yml.
